I really should buy stock in tinfoil, because it seems the Left has got their hat-production in overdrive.

In the back of my mind, I worry that this threat might be trumped up in order to divert attention from the disastrous US and British policy (or lack of policy) in Lebanon.

More likely, we have an informant in the UK that identified a potential plot that was in the dreaming stage but had not progressed to actual implementation. Rather than act like security professionals, the Brits are acting like panicked nannies. Very sad.

Yeah, this was just something “trumped up” by Bush and Blair. And even if it wasn’t, we shouldn’t have actually done anything about it.

Talking Points Memo:
So, for all our very real and legitimate worry about dirty bombs and gas attacks, planes really do seem like they remain our chief vulnerability. And it makes sense. Flying bombs. Thousands of them in the air over our major cities at any one time. As I’ve written before, I have next to no confidence that this administration won’t pump exaggerated or bogus terror plots for short term political advantage. Especially as we move toward an election they seem likely to lose. But when the Brits completely shut down their major international airport (though now the shutdown seems to be easing) I’m quite ready to believe they found something very real.

Rove and his crew of course will stop at no end of bamboozlement and terror manipulation for political ends though. And the timing, well …

Wow. What a conclusion. It couldn’t be that Islamic jihadists are still trying to attack America and her allies and WE CAUGHT THEM using data-mining, SWIFT subpeonas, and NSA surveillance, the very tactics that Democrats stand against. Nope, the biggest danger we have to deal with is… Karl Rove.

Bush just invoked a Code Red terrorist emergency, our first ever.

And isn’t it queer that the emergency is declared within a day of Republican party leader Ken Mehlman launching an all-out offensive against Democrats following Joe Lieberman’s loss in Connecticut, an offensive in which Mehlman, the White House and Republican operatives are claiming that Democrats no longer care about national security or the war on terror!

Do I sound as if I don’t believe this alert? Why, yes, that would be correct. I just don’t believe it.

Bottom line: Joe Lieberbush lost. The message is spreading across the land that incumbents who embrace the president are in serious trouble. And the Republicans needed to divert attention, to stop this meme in its tracks, and lo’ and behold we have our first terror alert that I can recall since the last election, and it’s our first ever Red Alert! What a coincidence!

Yeah, that’s it. President Bush didn’t issue a Code Red alert because of an “imminent” and “massive” terror attack using liquid explosives on trans-Atlantic flights. He did it because a Democrat incumbent lost in the Connecticut Senate primary.

Genius.
