The return of "human shields?"

Today I discovered a new blogger, Bicyclemark, whose ideas got me stirred up. But I mean that in a good way. This whole recent situation between Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah has had me uncertain as to what to think. Until now. Seems to me there’s blame enough for each side. But Bicyclemark’s suggestion (you can view his vlog here) for European or U.N. “human shields” to stymie Israel’s violent reaction to aggression served to epitomize Liberal thought for me .

And I’m sure you can already guess my response. But I’ll share it with ya anyway.

I discovered your blog by way of Holywriter, and must say I was intrigued by your vlog in spite of your use of a communist Soviet prop. By the way, why that country? Your championing of their military while decrying Israel’s seems hypocritical to me, especially in light of the Soviet Union’s military history.

Sorry for the detour, back to the topic at hand. You put a lot of thought into your “unarmed response” solution, way more than most people do. And I commend you for it. But I think your idea totally overlooks the nature of guerilla fighting. You’ve been snookered by the prime goal of terrorists who hide among civilians: to be able to commit violence with impunity because of the innocence they hide among.

You’re basically saying to Israel, “Don’t like how Muslims kill your people? Too bad, you better not attack the country which shields them, they aren’t in the violent minority that did it.” “Don’t like how Hezbollah kidnaps your soldiers? Too bad, you can’t punish an entire nation just because they’re hiding your enemies.”

What is Israel supposed to do? Sit back and do nothing when its citizens or soldiers are kidnappend or murdered? Are they just supposed to give in to Hezbollah’s demands? Be bullied by, dare I say it, violence?

To ignore this is to justify and reward the tactics of terrorists hiding among civilians. Your suggested solution would be a convenient smokescreen for Hezbollah (along with Hamas, al Qaeda, and other terrorists) to hide behind. And it’s what they count on. While you talk of peaceful dialogue, the guerillas happily hide behind you to carry out their violence.

Your solution sounds good until you realize that the “human shields” are simply enabling violence on one side by squelching it on the other. And that’s no solution. You’ve simply picked which side you wish to hold all the power.

If the good people of Lebanon are, like you say, sick of all the fighting, then they should turn on the villainous scum literally hiding among them and turn them in. Not only to their own government, but to the government of Israel as well.

Violence, as deplorable as it may be, sometimes DOES actually solve things. To knowingly and continuously provoke a foe who can undoubtedly eradicate not only you but your entire country, one must not only be suicidal but insane. The idiot who walks up to a lion and kicks him repeatedly will deserve being eaten. The militants who cause Lebanon to be crippled may wind up hurting their cause and their country so much that they cannot continue to provoke the inevitable response.

If Lebanon and Hezbollah don’t want to be attacked by Israel, they shouldn’t attack Israel. As they say on the streets, “Don’t start nothin’, won’t be nothin’.”

If Lebanon wants the violence to stop, they should undo what they did, which in this case means giving back the soldiers their milita kidnapped. Peace could be that easy. Israel already offered that solution.

Is Lebanon’s government demanding that Hezbollah give back the soldiers? Or are they quietly sitting and allowing others (like yourself) to try to shame Israel into inaction?

Clearly we don’t see eye to eye on either the situation or the solution. But it makes for an interesting discussion. If Israel isn’t allowed to respond because, well, violence is just mean, where does that leave things between these two antagonistic countries? Sounds pretty naive to me. What do YOU think needs to happen over there?
