Superman leans left?
Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris, the screenwriters for “Superman Returns,” have changed Superman’s famous motto, “Truth, Justice and the American way” to “Truth Justice and … all that stuff.”
No lie.
Jeannie Wolf reports on Movies.com that screenwriters Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris wanted to avoid outdated jingoism.
Dan: “I don’t think ‘the American way’ means what it meant in 1945.”
Mike: “He’s not just for Metropolis and not just for America.”
Dan: “He’s an alien, from Krypton; he has come to Earth to be kind of a savior for this world, not our country . . . And he has no papers.”
Mike: “What would happen with the immigration laws we have now?” Dan: “I’d like to see someone kick him out!”
Oh isn’t that cute. Let’s mess with an American icon. While you’re at it, why don’t we just have him join the U.N. and wear a cute little blue helmet while he flies around doing chores for Khofi Annan. Or maybe have him attend a protest with Cindy Sheehan and send in a photo to Sorry Everybody.com.
What is wrong with these two? What kinda mamby-pamby anti-American bullshit is this? What is “all that stuff” supposed to mean? Are these two so ashamed of their country that they’ve gotta come up with a euphemism that allows them to banish the idea of “the American way?” Just the use of that phrase is now considered “outdated jingoism?”
WTF?
Regardless of the fact that Superman is supposed to be from another planet, the story is that he’s lived his entire life IN AMERICA. He’s an American, you apologist a-holes! Most of the time, he’s saving people in the fictional AMERICAN city of Metropolis. Sure, he flies around the world and does things for people everywhere. But the ideals of truth, justice, and freedom ARE the American way. Why did these ultramaroons see a need to change that?
I’ve been all jazzed to go see this movie for several months, and I’m still gonna go see it. But these two writers need to be seriously cockpunched.
