Letters about the editor

poster028.jpg Regular readers of this blog know that sometimes, I get so pissed off that I just have to fire off an email to President Bush. Not that he’s waiting to hear from yours truly. But because if I don’t get it off my chest, I’ll just bust.

And maybe, just maybe, if his office is flooded with millions of calls and letters, he just might take action.

The current situation, with the media arrogantly publishing classified information again, is more than I can stand. So I had to send letters to President Bush and the Attorney General. Seems I’m not the only one, either. Michelle Malkin has a roundup of several other letters.

Somewhere, deep in the bowels of a government building, my name and address has probably been added to a list (again). And somewhere, no doubt, an IRS agent prepares a mondo ass-reaming audit for me.

Dear Attorney General Gonzales,

As I’m sure you’re well aware, New York Times reporters Eric Lichtblau and James Risen and editor Bill Keller have have decided to publish classified information about the government’s SWIFT program, compromising our nation’s security for a “gotcha” against the Bush administration.

Article III, section 3 of the Constitution states:

“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

If I were to come into possession of government secrets, and were to email them to terrorists overseas, or call them via phone and tell them what I know, or even, say, take out an ad in a newspaper, it would be clear that I have committed an act of treason by giving aid to the enemies of the United States during a time of war. As such, I’m quite certain I would be immediately apprehended and convicted. And rightly so.

So why is this not happening to Mr. Lichtblau, Mr. Risen, and Mr. Keller?

Is it just because they happen to work at an influencial newspaper and you’re worried about the appearance of making such high-profile arrests?

Well, sir, with all due respect, I’m more concerned about the appearance of terrorists on American soil and the potential deaths of more American citizens. I urge you in the strongest possible way to do your duty as a law enforcement officer. Your own DOJ mission statement says, “To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.”

Again, that’s “to ensure public safety against threats foreign AND DOMESTIC.”

There couldn’t be a clearer case of a domestic threat than the treasonous actions taken by Eric Lichtblau, James Risen and Bill Keller.

President Bush has frequently stated that we are a nation of laws. Yet, if the chief law enforcement officer of the Federal Government refuses to take action against flagrant lawbreakers, our system of justice is a laughingstock. The New York Times is thumbing its nose at the law, choosing instead to decide what is classified and what should be revealed to the world.

It is at the heart of your job responsibility to do something about these traitors who have betrayed our country. Their political bent and their hatred of this administration is causing them to do things which are not only hampering the ability of intelligence and law enforcement officials to do their jobs, but may actually put Americans in harm’s way by failing to stop terrorist who wish to slaughter our citizens.

Please put a stop to this blatant injustice. Arrest and prosecute these criminals.

Sincerely,

Dear President Bush,

I am outraged that New York Times reporters Eric Lichtblau and James Risen and editor Bill Keller have have decided to publish classified information about the government’s SWIFT program.

The New York Times has, through the publishing of secret government information, given aid to our enemies.

Which is treason.

Yet your Attorney General, the honorable Alberto Gonzales, is doing NOTHING about this situation.

The freedom of the press and the public’s so-called “right to know” do not trump our nation’s security, especially in a time of war. And it is the responsiblity of your office – and his – to protect our nation against “threats foreign and domestic.”

You took an oath to that effect.

The treason of the New York Times, and several other newspapers since, has placed our country in danger by giving vital information to the terrorists who wish to slaughter us.

I’m sure you know this.

And I’m sure you also know that nation’s citizens look to you for protection.

Sir, the manner in which I write is frequently coarse and less than elegant. As a fellow Texan, I’m sure you understand. So I mean no disrespect when I say that you need to get off your butt and do something about these traitors who have betrayed our country. Don’t worry about how it might look. Don’t worry about what people might say. They don’t like you anyway (not that it matters). What matters is making sure those who break the law are brought to justice. And setting a precedent that your administration won’t tolerate further breaches of security.

Please direct your Attorney General to take action against every person at the New York Times who had a hand in revealing such crucial classified information. Please make an example of these traitors. Please show the world that we truly are, as you have stated, a nation of laws.

Sincerely,

If you wanna join me (in writing, not necessarily in getting an audit), letters may be directed to…

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales: AskDOJ@usdoj.gov
President George W. Bush: comments@whitehouse.gov
The New York Times: letters@nytimes.com

UPDATE: Representative Peter King (R-NY) is urging Attorney General Gonzalez to bring criminal charges against the New York Times as well as the other news organizations that chose to publish the classified information. King is also the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
