Israel prepares Hamas smackdown

Nice to see Israel proving they’ve still got a pair.

Via AP: GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Friday that Israel’s offensive in Gaza — including the kidnappings of some of his Cabinet ministers — was part of a premeditated plan to bring down the Hamas-led government.

In his first public comments since the Israeli offensive started, Haniyeh said Palestinian leaders were working hard to end the standoff but implied they would not trade a captive soldier for eight Cabinet ministers and 56 other Hamas officials arrested Thursday.

Israel’s air force has struck more than 30 targets in Gaza — including the Palestinian Interior Ministry — in response to Sunday’s kidnapping of Cpl. Gilad Shalit, 19, by Hamas-linked militants. Thousands of Israeli soldiers backed by tanks also have taken up positions in southern Gaza.

Haniyeh said the military offensive was not only about rescuing the soldier but also about crippling Hamas, which won January parliamentary elections.

Wow. Ya think?

If you’ve been following the news, you already know this was all started when Hamas decided it would kidnap Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. And, of course, it didn’t help that an 18-year-old Eliyahu Asheri on the West Bank was kidnapped and murdered this week by the Hamas-affiliated Popular Resistance Committee. Then, Israeli warplanes buzzed the summer palace of Syrian President Bashar Assad (creating a sonic boom) to pressure him to dismantle Palestinian militant groups based in his country (and obtain Shalit’s release). Syria is sheltering Khaled Meshaal, Hamas’ exiled supreme leader.

Ismail Haniyeh and the rest of Hamas figured that Israel would agree to an exchange of prisoners for hostages, and that they would be hushed by the rest of the world into inaction, negotiations, and eventual complicity. But as they demonstrated, Israel isn’t gonna play it that way.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz refused a request by the Shin Bet security service and the government to place dozens of senior Hamas officials under administrative detention or hold them as “bargaining chips” under the Unlawful Combatants Law.

Mazuz insisted that the arrests be carried out under ordinary criminal warrants that would require legal proceedings against the Hamas officials under the Prevention of Terror Ordinance. They will probably be charged with membership in or leadership of a terrorist organization.

As long as they continue to try to play both sides of terrorism/diplomacy, Hamas will continue to get the sharp end of the stick from Israel.

Israeli officials tell the New York Times the arrests “indicated a significant change in Israel’s policy toward the Hamas government. The seizures are partly intended to warn Hamas leaders that they could lose their power and liberty, if not their lives, unless they act to release a captured Israeli soldier, a senior Israeli military official said. But Israel has also concluded that Hamas, which had largely kept to a cease-fire before, is now openly engaged in violent acts against Israel and must be treated differently.”

The Jerusalem Post reports Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has reached a deal with Hamas leaders for a conditional release of the soldier, but Israeli government sources tell the paper they don’t have details of the proposal.

Beth has the right idea:

Yesterday Hamas claimed not to know of the soldier’s whereabouts, and now they’re doing a deal with Mubarak for his release?

You cannot trust any of these people. Build the wall, let them starve.

Dan lays out the situation for both sides:

My advice for Isreal: Stomp ‘em flat; the pig-fucking cowards kidnapped your soldier inside your borders. Instead of negotiating with the terrorists the Palestinian Authority should have bent over backwards assisting you with recovering your lost sons.

My advice for the Palestinians: Change your tune real quick. If you want to be a nation then act like a nation and not spoiled children. Civilized countries do not support terrorists and uncivilized countries have no basis for complaint when they are bitch-slapped.
