Religion of Peace update: Iran’s ultimatum

I was alarmed, but not surprised, to learn of the content of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent letter to President Bush: it’s a da’wa – Mohammed’s prerequisite to waging war against unbelievers. The actual letter is here in PDF form. (h/t: Flopping Aces)

President Ahmadinejad’s letter to President Bush, widely interpreted as a peaceful overture, is in fact a declaration of war. The key sentence in the letter is the closing salutation. In an eight-page text of the letter being circulated by the Council on Foreign Relations, it is left untranslated and rendered as “Vasalam Ala Man Ataba’al hoda.” What this means is “Peace only unto those who follow the true path.”

It is a phrase with historical significance in Islam, for, according to Islamic tradition, in year six of the Hejira – the late 620s – the prophet Mohammad sent letters to the Byzantine emperor and the Sassanid emperor telling them to convert to the true faith of Islam or be conquered. The letters included the same phrase that President Ahmadinejad used to conclude his letter to Mr. Bush. For Mohammad, the letters were a prelude to a Muslim offensive, a war launched for the purpose of imposing Islamic rule over infidels.

Is this the peace referred to by Muslims who claim their religion is misunderstood?

This is no longer simply about people misinterpreting the actions of a few extremists who have “hijacked” Islam. It’s the extremists who are leading the quiet majority of the rest of Islam. We’ve got Palestine under the control of Hamas terrorists and the president of Iran not only making statements about exterminating Israel, but making motions to subjugate America under Sha’ria law. The only thing being hijacked is the freedom of every non-Muslim in America.

Via the Islamic Republic News Agency:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Thursday that his letter to President George W. Bush did not concern the nuclear dossier, but rather was an invitation to Islam and the prophets culture.

Stressing that the letter was beyond the nuclear issue, the chief executive said that in principle, the country’s nuclear case is not so significant to make him write a letter about it.

“We act according to laws and our activities are quite clear. We are rather intent on solving more fundamental global matters.

“The letter was an invitation to monotheism and justice, which are common to all divine prophets. If the call is responded positively, there will be no more problems to be solved,” added the president.

The president said that the letter actually contained a clear message of invitation to human beliefs, adding that its response will determine the future.

Wow, so the whole nuclear issue is not that big a deal, certainly not meriting a letter to President Bush. But converting Bush to Islam? Well, we’d better get right on that!

Hrmm. Does this bother anyone else here? Ahmadinejad is demanding that Bush become a Muslim in order to solve America’s “problems” with Iran.

Does anyone else see this not-so-veiled threat?

There have been a few commenters here who disagree with me about Islam, thinking I’m too harsh in my assessment of their religion. Yet, time and time again we keep seeing the kind of overbearing evangelism and defiant attitude which mark the current Wahabbi and Jihadi mindset. Which should we believe – the words of Islamic apologists claiming peace or the actions of Islamic militants who claim to be following the same Qur’an for violence? (and the more modern verses at that!) Will these followers of extreme Islam practice takfir [the classification of Muslims with different beliefs as being among the unbelievers] against the moderate Muslims who don’t believe in their overzealous interpretation of the Qur’an?

The Qur’an and Sunnah teach warfare against unbelievers until they are either converted to Islam or subjugated as dhimmis. Ahmadinejad is extending the traditional Islamic invitation to become a believer or to be ruled by an Islamic Caliphate under Sharia law (and we’ve all seen recent examples of the tolerance of Islam).

This is precisely the kind of action commanded of Muslims in the Qur’an 9:29:

“Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah [Dhimmi tax] with willing sumission, and feel themselves subdued.”

And in Sahih Muslim vol.3, 4292:

“Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from then and desist from fighting against them. Then invite them to migrate from their lands to the land of Muhajirs and inform them that, if they do so, they shall have all the privileges and obligations of the Muhajirs. If they refuse to migrate, tell them that they will have the status of Bedouin Muslims and will be subjected to the Commands of Allah like other Muslims, but they will not get any share from the spoils of war or Fai’ [(property abandoned by fleeing non-Muslims] except when they actually fight with the Muslims (against the disbelievers.) If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from the Jizya [Dhimmi tax]. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them.”

So what do you think Ahmadinejad’s course of action will be once Bush refuses the invitation to become a Muslim?

Many Muslims are being more and more open about their true goals. Earlier this week, Abu Abdullah, a senior member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Jordan’s Party of Liberation was quoted as saying,

“[President] Bush says that we want to enslave people and oppress their freedom of speech, but we want to free all people from being slaves of men and make them slaves of Allah.”

James Brandon offers some analysis of the current situation:

“A few years ago people laughed at them,” says Zeyno Baran, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and the leading expert on Hizb ut-Tahrir. “But now that [Osama] bin Laden, [Abu Musab al-] Zarqawi, and other Islamic groups are saying they want to recreate the Caliphate, people are taking them seriously.”

Even more moderate Muslim groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt pay lip-service to the ideal of reestablishing the Caliphate, leaving less ideological space for Muslims who want to move toward Western models of democracy.

More from the same article (read the whole thing here):

“Islam obliges Muslims to possess power so that they can intimidate – I would not say terrorize – the enemies of Islam,” says Abu Mohammed, a Hizb ut-Tahrir activist. “In the beginning, the Caliphate would strengthen itself internally and it wouldn’t initiate jihad.”

“[W]e would carry Islam as an intellectual call to all the world,” says Abu Mohammed, a pseudonym. “And we will make people bordering the Caliphate believe in Islam. Or if they refuse then we’ll ask them to be ruled by Islam.”

Still think those of us wary of Islam are just making it up? Here it is from their own lips. Again. (h/t: Allahpundit via Hot Air)

“And if after all discussions and negotiations they still refuse, then the last resort will be a jihad to spread the spirit of Islam and the rule of Islam,” he says, smiling. “This is done in the interests of all people to get them out of darkness and into light.”

If things keep progressing at this rate, it’ll be the light of nuclear war.
