Is Islam really "hijacked?"
For the past several years, we’ve heard plenty from Muslim apologists who claim that Islam is a “Religion of Peace” that has been hijacked by radicals?
Before we get into the real meat of the issue, let’s establish the meaning of hijack.

So has the “real” Islam been hijacked? Or are Muslim terrorists actually just obedient followers of Muhammad? Let’s take a look at the Qur’an and Hadith (official narrations concerning the words and deeds of Muhammad):
- 2:190-191 — And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight with you, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits. And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers. - 3:151 — We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they joined others in worship with Allâh, for which He had sent no authority; their abode will be the Fire and how evil is the abode of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers)[The Prohibition of Obeying the Disbelievers; the Cause of Defeat at Uhud]
- 8:12 — (Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels, “Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes. [Allah commands the Angels to fight and support the Believers]
- 9:5 — Then when the Sacred Months have passed, then kill the [unbelievers] wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush. But if they repent and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then leave their way free. [This is the Ayah of the Sword]
- 9:29 — Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah [Dhimmi tax] with willing sumission, and feel themselves subdued. [The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah] [Paying Jizyah is a Sign of Kufr and Disgrace]
- Sahih Muslim vol.3, 4292 — Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from then and desist from fighting against them. Then invite them to migrate from their lands to the land of Muhajirs and inform them that, if they do so, they shall have all the privileges and obligations of the Muhajirs. If they refuse to migrate, tell them that they will have the status of Bedouin Muslims and will be subjected to the Commands of Allah like other Muslims, but they will not get any share from the spoils of war or Fai’ [(property abandoned by fleeing non-Muslims] except when they actually fight with the Muslims (against the disbelievers.) If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from the Jizya [Dhimmi tax]. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them.
- Bukhari Vol. 4, Book 52, Number 220 — Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand.” …
- Bukhari (1:8:387) – “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.’”
- Bukhari (4:53:392) – “While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, “Let us go to the Jews” We went out till we reached Bait-ul-Midras. He said to them, “If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. So, if anyone amongst you owns some property, he is permitted to sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle.”
- Bukhari (5:59:643) – “Testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, or else I will chop off your neck!“
- Hidayah, vol. Ii. P. 140 — “If the infidels, upon receiving the call [to Islam] neither consent to it nor agree to pay the [infidel] tax, it is incumbent on Muslims to call upon God for assistance, and to make war upon them.”
There you have Muhammad’s words, from the Hilali & Khan translation of the Qur’an. I have hyperlinked the Surah:Ayat numbers to the source for easy verification and access to the entire documents in context. Bracketed references are to Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir, which explains the meaning of the ayat. Muhammad’s words come from Khan’s translation of Sahih Bukhari, the most accepted & trusted hadith collection.
And if that wasn’t enough, feel free to peruse the rest of the 164 verses in the Qur’an which call for violent jihad.
Given all this, do you seriously belive that Islam has been distorted or “hijacked?” Or are the radical Islamists simply acting in accordance with the most recent teachings of Muhammad?
Islam as a modern religion may be peaceful if it is followed as such. But make no mistake, Islam as a political ideology is barbaric, sexist, and excessively violent. It is a declaration of war against everyone who doesn’t submit to Islam. And this war is supposed to be ongoing until all infidels have converted, paid a submission tax or have been murdered by faithful Muslims. This is the command of the Qur’an that is being followed by Islamists.
Are there peaceful Muslims? Most certainly! But there has been no hijacking of a “religion of peace.” Those who murder in the name of Allah are are following the violent example of their founder – Muhammad. Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda are following the exact teachings of Islam as recorded in the Qur’an and interpreted in the Hadith.
