Haditha: jackpot for the antiwar Left
I’ve been following the events of the past few days with a mix of disgust and shock. I’m ashamed at the thought of American Marines possibly shooting innocent women and children in Haditha (you can read some perspective on Haditha here). And I’m even more surprised to find so many on the Left willing to not only believe it, but are tripping over themselves in their rush to judgement as well as spraining their shoulders while they try to pat themselves on the back for their opposition of the war. As if this alleged event justifies their calls for early withdrawl. They’ve been anxiously awaiting this war’s My Lai, and now it appears they may have it.
I’m still waiting on the results of the TWO ongoing investigations. After all, this happened back in November and the results won’t be coming out for a few weeks. But most importantly, the military is looking to get to the bottom of this and, if things are as they seem, to severely punish those soldiers involved. That’s key. If it’s true, and we have Marines who killed unarmed women and children, then I hope they receive the death penalty. But until we know for sure, our soldiers deserve the benefit of the doubt:
Is it too much to ask that our politicians defend their military when it sacrifices so much for them? Is it too much to ask that our government stand behind these marines when they need their help the most? Is it too much to ask that the marines be given a fair trial before lowlifes like John Murtha condemn them in the court of public opinion before their real trial even takes place?Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
In the meantime, I found a very good article which puts into words how I’m feeling about the situation:
There are countless numbers of anti-war zealots on the American Left rooting for failure. They believe the worst about the troops. They’ve blindly embraced frauds who’ve lied about their military service and lied about wartime atrocities. They’ve allied themselves with socialist kooks and coddled murderous dictators. They are looking for any excuse to pull out, abandon military operations and reconstruction, and impeach the president. [emphasis added]They insist on giving suspected foreign terrorists more benefit of the doubt than our own men and women in uniform. And that, I know, I am not willing to do.
I will wait. I will pray. And I will remind you that while the murder of civilians is and remains an anomaly in American military history, it is the jihadists’ way of life.
