Dhimmi Carter, terrorist fundraiser

If you look up “irresponsible” in the dictionary, you’ll see this opinion piece written by former President Jimmy “Dhimmi” Carter. Sadly, Mr. Carter has a history of supporting militant Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas and pushing for appeasement as a solution to their violence. Read his entire column here so you can get the full effect of his blathering. It seems to indicate he’s been breathing too much sawdust from building all those houses:

Innocent Palestinian people are being treated like animals, with the presumption that they are guilty of some crime. Because they voted for candidates who are members of Hamas, the United States government has become the driving force behind an apparently effective scheme of depriving the general public of income, access to the outside world and the necessities of life.

Honestly, what does he expect our response should be when terrorists are elected to run the Palestininian government? Did he think we should fund the terrorists?

Overwhelmingly, these are school teachers, nurses, social workers, police officers, farm families, shopkeepers, and their employees and families who are just hoping for a better life.

Sure they are! Just like the Viet Cong. And Al Qaeda. As well as hundreds of thousands of criminals in our prisons who used violence to obtain the means to that “better life” they desired.

One clear reason for the surprising Hamas victory for legislative seats was that the voters were in despair about prospects for peace. With American acquiescence, the Israelis had avoided any substantive peace talks for more than five years, regardless of who had been chosen to represent the Palestinian side as interlocutor.

Dang, those Israelis won’t engage in peace talks, so let’s car-bomb ‘em until they do!

With all their faults, Hamas leaders have continued to honor a temporary cease-fire, or hudna, during the past 18 months, and their spokesman told me that this “can be extended for two, 10 or even 50 years if the Israelis will reciprocate.”

Oh wow, thank you Hamas! Thank you for not blowing up more innocent civilians recently! Thank you for not targeting buses and shopping malls and crowded restaurants. That’s mighty nice of ya! Say, why don’t we give ya a few million dollars to make sure you don’t blow up any more people. We promise we’ll do whatever you say, just don’t blow us up. We’ll just put on our Dhimmi name tags and sit quietly in the corner until you tell us what else you want.

Captain Ed has a much more thorough (and less snarky) look at Islam’s idea of a “cease fire”:

Carter uses the Arabic hudna completely without any sense of its context. A hudna has never been understood as a prelude to a lasting peace, but a temporary cease fire of no more than ten years that allows Muslims a chance to gain the upper hand against an enemy. At any time during a hudna the Muslims can end it without warning in order to destroy their infidel enemies. [emphasis added] It is a term that arises from the Prophet himself, and has specific meaning and limits. The hudna proposed by Hamas in any case does not carry any promise of recognition for Israel; it appears Carter just made this up out of whole cloth. Perhaps the Hamas spokesman told this to Carter, as he alleges, but Hamas has yet to make this statement publicly — and to commit to a permanent cease-fire.

Are you noticing a pattern yet? What happened to Jimmy Carter – a former President of the United States – to make him take up the cause of Islamic terrorists?

Although Hamas leaders have refused to recognize the state of Israel while their territory is being occupied, Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has expressed approval for peace talks between Abbas and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel.

Just a technicality. Once Hamas meets with Israel’s Prime Minister, they’ll make sure to convince him that Israel needs to be exterminated.

He added that if these negotiations result in an agreement that can be accepted by Palestinians, then the Hamas position regarding Israel would be changed.

Once Israel gives in to ALL of Palestine’s demands, and gives up all of its own demands, then Hamas might allow Israel to exist… somewhere else.

Sounds fair, huh?

Regardless of these intricate and long-term political interrelationships, it is unconscionable for Israel, the United States and others under their influence to continue punishing the innocent and already persecuted people of Palestine.

Yeah! How dare we hold the Palestinian people accountable for the choices they made. Those poor people! They can’t be held responsible for following the guidance of terrorists who commit mass murder, right? They’re just misunderstood. They must have had bad childhoods, too. Let’s give them millions of dollars to make up for it.

The Israelis are withholding approximately $55 million a month in taxes and customs duties that, without dispute, belong to the Palestinians. Although some Arab nations have allocated funds for humanitarian purposes to alleviate human suffering, the U.S. government is threatening the financial existence of any Jordanian or other bank that dares to transfer this assistance into Palestine.

There is no way to predict what will happen in Palestine, but it would be a tragedy for the international community to abandon the hope that a peaceful coexistence of two states in the Holy Land is possible. Like Egypt and all other Arab nations before the Camp David Accords of 1978, and the Palestine Liberation Organization before the Oslo peace agreement of 1993, Hamas has so far refused to recognize the sovereign state of Israel as legitimate, with a right to live in peace. This is a matter of great concern to all of us, and the international community needs to probe for an acceptable way out of this quagmire. There is no doubt that Israelis and Palestinians both want a durable two-state solution, but depriving the people of Palestine of their basic human rights just to punish their elected leaders is not a path to peace.

Nobody is wanting to deprive Palestinians of their basic human rights. What we don’t wish to do is give money to these terrorists so they can turn around and use it to fund more suicide bombings. Nor do we wish to provide financial reward for a history of bloodthirsty violence.

By the way, allowing the people of Palestine to be exempt of their responsiblity for empowering terrorists is not a path to peace either.

We are under no moral or legal obligation to fund a terrorist state. It doesn’t matter whether they’re elected or not, we should not be giving money, and legitimacy, to the very people who use car bombs and explosive vests to slaughter civilians. The Palestinian people voted these violent extremists into office. They knew full well what they were doing. They should have thought through the consequences of their actions before casting their votes.

Surely, there are good people in Palestine who could work toward peace without violence. If the Palestinians don’t like the results of their choice, they need to elect new leadership. Peace between Israel and Palestine will not come from terrorism.
