A penny for your thoughts, a nickel for your standards

The freedom of religion at Liberty Elementary School has gone too far for some parents at the Colleyville school.
The cover of the Keller ISD school’s annual depicts the 2005 Liberty Nickel – complete with the face of Thomas Jefferson – but the words “In God We Trust” are missing.
Instead, the $16 yearbook contains a sticker with the credo and directions on how to apply it to the cover if the owner chooses.
Debbi Ackerman was one of the parents who questioned the missing phrase when her daughter brought the annual home from school.
“She said the teachers told them there was some people who didn’t believe in God, and that when they got home – don’t do it at school – but affix it when they got home,” Mrs. Ackerman said. [emphasis added]
Isn’t that crazy? Not only do we have to make sure someone doesn’t see the word “God” on a yearbook, but those who DO believe in God aren’t even allowed to use the sticker to restore the nickel to its actual appearance.
The school’s principal, Janet Travis, decided it would be best to censor it “to avoid offending students of different religions.”
Yeah, rather than the potential of offending someone, let’s MAKE SURE we offend the majority of our students and their parents. Nice job.
And the ACLU is there, of course, to make sure to offend the majority rather than the minority, too. (h/t: Stop the ACLU)
Michael Linz, a Dallas attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, said the district’s move was appropriate, sensitive and constitutional. [emphasis added]
“Sometimes administrators and schools are really caught trying to make appropriate decisions with respect to people’s views. Someone is always going to complain,” he said. “I think that the school administrators were drawing the appropriate line by trying not to offend others.”
Ah, sensitivity. The hallmark of Liberalism. Well, sensitivity to everyone but Christians.
Isn’t it odd that the ACLU thinks that Christians need to just shut up and take it when they’re offended, and that it’s acceptable to make decisions that skew that way. But we mustn’t make decisions that keep the majority in mind. Oh no, we have to cater to the minority, and fear the “someone” who might complain if our nation’s culture and heritage is displayed.
If the idea of showing a U.S. coin was offensive to Liberty Elementary’s principal Janet Travis and their PTA, or even if she thought that it might be offensive to someone, then she should have rejected the yearbook design and urged a different option. But excising “In God We Trust” from our currency, when it’s still there in reality, is just an exercise in Liberal censorship and demagogy.
Once again, we see how some people interpret “freedom of religion” to mean “freedom FROM religion.” The pendulum has swung too far in that direction.
