So THAT’S what progressive means!
I blogged about this subject last year. Because I got a 9/11 tattoo on my wrist as my own personal way of saying “never forget what happened to us on September 11, 2001.”
Well, apparently there are many on the Left who have “progressed” past 9/11. They seem to actively WANT to forget (or have already).
On that note, read some brilliance from The Sundries Shack: (h/t: Ace of Spades HQ)
He thinks, as Dave might say, “it’s old.”
And his readers agree that they, too, are “over” 9/11.
Although I kind of think they were “over” it before they started pulling bodies out of the wreckage.
You know, the first thought I had when I read Ace’s post was, “They’re not over the 2000 election. They’re not over the 2002 election. They’re not over the 2004 election. They’re not over crap that happened during the Vietnam era for goodness sake.
But they’re over 3000 dead Americans. ”
I can’t help but agree with Ace. If 9/11 had been caused by white American male Republicans, they’re still be on this like Michael Moore on a ginormous bowl of pudding.
Yet there’s so much here that’s just flippant and callous and just plain foolish. This bit of the post jumped out at me.
Yes I want to stop any future attacks, and yes I honor the victims, and all of that. But seriously? “Never forget?” Look, as abominable and shocking as it was, “never forget” is a bit much. I mean it carries the implicit suggestion that if it weren’t taken to heart and repeated, people would forget.
Yeah, yeah. Honor the victims. Yadda yadda. Respect the murdered and so forth.
I”m not sure that the words “honor” and “and all that” really belong in the same sentence, not if that sentence carries any actual sincerity.
As for the latter point, that’s not the implication the phrase “never forget” carries. What “never forget” says is that at some point hence there will be people who will try to lessen the meaning of what happened, will try to tell us that it’s not something that’s worth remembering, or that it didn’t happen the way we know it did. In short, “never forget” also means “never let some knuckehead diarist trivialize the brutal attack that killed 3000 of your fellow citizens”[emphasis added] in the same way that “never forget” also means “never let some raving maniac on the verge of getting nuclear weapons get away with saying that the Holocaust never happened and even if it did, it was the Jews’ just desserts”.
The author claims to have “no agenda”, but folks, you can see through that every bit as well as I. There’s an agenda here and that agenda’s foremost point is, “It’s okay here. There’s nothing to worry about. Go on back to sleep.”
We slept once, for a whole decade. We’ve paid the butcher’s bill for our little nap from history. Now we’re awake and, whether the author believes it or not, we can not afford, on our lives, to sleep on the world ever again.
