Oh, THAT media bias!

Reuters chose to run a carefully cropped photo of Vice President Dick Cheney last week. What a coincidence that the pic was trimmed down so the word “retire” appears over his head, huh? I’m sure it’s all a big mistake. Right? (h/t: Drudge)

UPDATE: (via Michelle Malkin) Compare the drastic cropping above with the other photos from Cheney’s speech at the U.S. Labor Department’s 2006 National Summit on Retirement Savings: here, here, and here.

From Reuters’ editorial policy:

Reuters news operations are based on the company’s Trust Principles which stipulate that the integrity, independence and freedom from bias of Reuters must be upheld at all times.
Reuters has strict policies in place to ensure adherence to these principles. We are committed to accurate and balanced reporting…

…We do not take sides and attempt to reflect in our stories, pictures and video the views of all sides. We are not in the business of glorifying one side or another or of disseminating propaganda. Reuters journalists do not offer their own opinions or views.

Ok, sure. No agenda here at Reuters. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for. You can go about your business. Move along.

UPDATE: Neal Boortz has some good perspective on this kind of political photo-op (and its manipulation):

Now Reuters will say…wait a minute, we’re just running a photo of the vice president. But their hands has been caught in the cookie jar on this one. Why is the word “retire” perfectly cropped while the picture of Cheney low in the frame? Come on, folks. Face it. This was deliberate. I know, it’s not a big issue, but when it comes to the media we’re talking about the death of a thousand cuts anyway.

Having said that … I do want to express my distaste for the seemingly newfound practice of having custom printed banners behind politicians, Republicans and Democrats, every time they show up where their pictures can be taken. It’s clever, I suppose. Someone figured out how to get the message of the day out with every picture that is snapped. Maybe there’s some poetic justice in having someone crop the picture to deliver an unintended message.
