Back to the old drawing board, literally
I found a new blog, Ice-Cream Monster Toon Cafe, and it’s been inspiring to see such a prolific artist (I love her little Ice-Cream Monster and think he’s got some serious commercial potential). Anyhow, she’s got sketches, doodles, gestural drawings posted all over her blog, and seeing her work has inspired me to get more active about my own artwork.
Here are some samples of what I’ve been working on recently. I was saying yesterday how I’m looking to get out of advertising and into something which makes more use of my drawing abilities. I’ve been doing some work – on and off – for the past few months toward that end. Since I’ve been interested in the world of tattoo, that’s naturally the kind of stuff I’ve been drawing – and I’m trying to fill up a sketchbook with studies of different tattoo designs. That’s what I’d be doing as an apprentice anyhow. So I figure that when I’m financially able to get an apprenticeship, I’ll be that much ahead of the game by having several sketchbooks filled with motifs and studies of different subjects.
In that regard, I’ve decided to make some drawings for my parents. My mother has always been VERY encouraging of my ability. And for whatever reason (I can guess why, though), I just stopped drawing while I was married. Kaput. End of line. That was over 15 years without any drawing or painting. It just died inside me and I had no interest in it. I don’t know why I allowed that life-sucking b*tch of an ex-wife to take away something that is such a part of me. But I did. And now more than ever, I’m glad I put an end to that.
So now I’m drawing again. For my mother, I made a traditional heart & scroll saying “Mom” and a nice rose. For Dad, however, I decided to try to stretch myself a bit and actually design something from scratch. I’m really happy with how this one is progressing, now I just have to add color. I’ve got a winged golf ball to symbolize one of his passions. And the skulls and helmets on either side represent different aspects of his past: at the University of Florida (I still need to put “Gators” on the side of the helmet), and a Vietnam-era helmet for his time in the U.S. Army. Then the Japanese-style fire and water are to provide balance as well as just a cool motif. And the scroll in the center will have his name in cool script letters.
It’s taken several days to get this far, as I usually only have an hour here or there to work on things. But regardless of where my ability takes me (I’ll have to show you some of my other stuff another time), at least I’m on the path now.
