Captain Malaise plays politics

In a stunning display of arrogance and indifference to the decorum expected at the funeral of civil rights leader Coretta Scott King, former President Jimmy Carter decided that his time at the podium would be best spent scoring political points against President George W. Bush, who was also in attendance (big ups to W for not walking out in disgust). Expose the Left has the video.

“It was difficult for them then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretaps.”

Of course, he forgot to point out those wiretaps were under a Democrat president. From their icon, President John F. Kennedy, in fact, and authorized by his brother – Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. But why let facts get in the way of a good old lie? The Anchoress asks a pertinent question:

…exactly when did the Democrats utterly revise history and co-opt the civil rights movement? Why does the world forget that it was Democrat Bull Connor putting the hoses and the dogs on the marchers, and the Republicans standing up for civil rights? Why doesn’t anyone mention that Bobby Kennedy was wiretapping King?

But even though those are the facts, a funeral is not the time to be stirring up partisan shit.

But the Democrat sphincters were puckered and eager to squeeze out a steaming turd onto the King funeral, further demonstrating why they’re out of power and out of step with mainstream America. President Carter made sure to fan the flames of racial tension:

“We only have to recall the colour of the faces of those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi who are most devastated by Katrina to know that there are not yet equal opportunities for all Americans.”

If his goal was to say that we have further to go on race relations in America, that’s fine. Because we do. And probably always will. But there’s no need to turn a call to healing into a political swipe.

President Carter wasn’t the only one demonstrating an utter lack of shame. Rev. Joseph Lowry also took advantage of the spotlight to make political statements:

“She extended Martin’s message against poverty, racism and war / She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar.”

“We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there / But Coretta knew and we knew that there are weapons of misdirection right down here / Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor.”

Don’t be so sure, Reverend.

If you hate Bush, fine. If you want to get in front of a camera and spew that hatred to all of America (and our enemies), knock yourself out. But to do so from the pulpit of a church – during a funeral ceremony important enough to draw 4 Presidents – is absolutely despicable. This was to be her day of remembrance. Not a Bush-bashing political rally.
