Why politics are off the table at Christmas dinner
Here’s a good back-and-forth I saw over at Hector Vex’s blog; an email mini-war between his father and his second cousin over this Patriot Act/spying hullabaloo. First, his father sounded off on Bush’s actions:
“If I understand the President correctly, it is ok to tap our phones without a court order. I know, they are only tapping phone calls of suspected terrorist – THEN GET A COURT ORDER! It seems to me that tapping a phone, without a court order is a far more serious offense then tapping an intern. I know, getting a court is TOO slow, a real inconvience when breaking the law. Very few pleas for a court order are ever denied (only 18 of 18,00 – as revealed on ABC TONIGHT – Tonight, a few minutes ago.So, when talking to your friends on the phone, avoid the use of the following words (which a computer will detect as it scans 100′s of thousands of calls):
KILL ( as in Kill BIll?), ASSASINATE, BOMB ( as in, “that movie was a bomb”), HIJACK, KIDNAP, OSAMA, BI LADEN, SADAMM – oh, you get the picture. So what’s next? Reading this e-mail? How can any intelligent person still think that W and company are good for this country?
I am right and anyone who thinks differently is wrong.
Fortunatly, almost all of the people I am sending this to, also agree with me. Just ranting. I AM SO PISSED.”
And the response from his cousin:
“well, it’s not like he 1) got 800 classified FBI files on his political opponents and then had his wife blame it on the ex-bouncer she hired as a Whitehouse security guard; 2) turned down 3 offers from Sudan to turn over Osama Bin Laden several years before 9/11; 3) erected a wall between the CIA and FBI that prevented them from sharing information about known terrorists in the U.S., including Army Intel that had identified Mohammed Atta and 2 of the other 9/11 terrorists a year before the attack, but which could not be shared with the FBI per Clinton mandates – mandates which also conveniently prevented the CIA from sharing investigatory info on the multitude of foreigners who gave illegal Chinese campaign contributions to Clinton/Gore and then fled the country when the Justice Dept. started “investigating”; or 4) gave nuclear reactors to a rogue country (N. Korea) which immediately enriched uranium and developed nuclear weapons which it is now proliferating to other rogue nations. But hey, what’s all that compared to a President allowing eavesdropping on 30 people whose names or telephone numbers had shown up on cell phones or note book computers of terrorists captured in Iran or Iraq? Given that I would like to hear an explanation as to why Court orders were not sought, but leading dems and repubs were told of program more than a year ago – it only became an issue now b/c Iraq had a successful election and certain major media outlets like the NY Times were determined to not let any wisp of success make its way out of Iraq and therefore turned a monumental moment into one more Bush bashing. I guess the bottom line is we’re at war with fanatical terrorists – in WWII, several Nazi spies were captured trying to enter the U.S. – FDR, after military tribunal trials, had them executed. No ACLU, no moveon.org, no kennedy/kerry/durbin assaults on America or our soldiers, just protection of the Country in a time of war. The Constitution gives the President broad authority to protect the Country, I’m willing to let this one play out a little more before jumping to conclusions.”
Plus an addendum:
The rules that Hector’s father is so eloquently stating were put into place after the 9/11 crisis. It gave the president broad sweeping powers when it comes to finding, investigating, trying, and convicting terrorist regimes at home and abroad. He has near limitless powers when it comes to this with checks and balances that are very few and far between, but only in regards to terrorism. Now remember, this is a democracy, not a dictatorship, GWB did not MAGICALLY get these power, who gave them to him? Why our elected leaders did, both sides of the aisle gave him the power to handle this but they really didn’t think it through now did they?
GWB is only doing what the law gave him power to do, why be inflamed at him for something our representatives and congressmen gave him to use, he’s only following the rules we gave him as is the way our 3 tiered gov’t works.
Looks like it’s gonna be an interesting Christmas at the Vex’s this year!
