Modernizing Jim Crow

Posted 04 Nov 2005 in homosexuality

I’ve been meaning to get to this all week, but current political events have sprung up all over the place like a Jiffy-Pop on a hot stove.

Next Tuesday, Nov 8, Texas voters will be given the chance to vote on a proposed amendment to the Constitution. It’s called Proposition 2, and it would outlaw gay marriage. The ballot will say:

“The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

What I want to know is why we need this amendment?

I can totally understand how some people object to gay marriage on religious grounds. In fact, I had a spirited debate with my two oldest daughters a few weeks ago over this very subject. My oldest is firmly against gay marriage, citing that homosexuality is called a sin in the Bible. My middle daughter was in favor of it, failing to see why the State should be involved in this aspect of human relationships. I was proud of both of them for being involved in this issue and for both having thought out their positions reasonably well. Both had strong feelings about it, and we were able to hash things out pretty well.

For my part, I think the state needs to legally recognize (and give the same financial and medical benefits to) gays & lesbians just as they do for hetero married couples. If some religious people wanna throw a hissy about the word “marriage” then fine, just keep state ceremonies called “civil unions” and let churches perform “weddings.” Churches don’t have to allow gays to marry if they don’t want to. But the state shouldn’t be discriminating.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a damn word. How does it affect me one iota if two gay guys or two gay girls decide they love each other and want to be committed to each other?

It doesn’t.

And it doesn’t affect any of these rabid anti-gay activists, either. I don’t understand their need to single out this one “sin” for rebuke. Everybody sins. And in God’s eyes, all sin is equally bad. It’s we who put qualifiers on things. I guess it’s just easier for someone to say “yeah, I lie and I cheat and I swear at traffic and lust after my neighbor, but at least I’m not a dang homo!”

Which leads me to Tuesday’s vote. This weekend, people in favor of the gay marriage ban will gather in Austin for a big rally to drum up more support for the amendment.

Thing is, they’ll be wearing sheets.

That’s right, the Ku Klux Klan is strongly in favor of this ban, too.

When you find yourself on the same side of an issue as the Klan, don’t you think it’s time to take a closer look at what you’re really supporting?

UPDATE: The Malcontent has the solution to this whole issue. Why didn’t we think of this before?
