Feeding the hand that bites you

I gotta say, I’m really disgusted with the extreme Left this week (as you can no doubt tell from the recent tenor of my posts). This morning, I was reading the comments section over on Tony’s blog, regarding yesterday’s protest against the war in Iraq, and was sickened by the ignorance I read:

“dude, that is sweet. fuck GW and his damn war. and long live rebellion and true democracy!”

“I agree…fuck GW and Cheney and this whold goddamn war. Is it me, or is our govt. slowly turning into the evil empire governed by the dark side?”

“RESIST AND EXIST!”

“these are GOOD kids!!”

I take issue with the idea that these were all good kids, given the fact that they got into throwing molotov cocktails at police officers and setting fire to buildings.

These may indeed have been other good kids there, but yesterday they were all pawns used by anti-American groups to forward their agenda (Youth Against War and Racism, the organizer for the protest, is a front for Socialist Alternative. World Can’t Wait is a fringe communist group dedicated to removing Bush from office).

We welcome any individuals and groups who agree that the Bush Regime should be driven out, whatever their political party affiliation or lack thereof.

The kids were given slogans to chant and maybe some factoids to get riled up about, but many ultimately didn’t know why they were really there other than the fact that it felt good to “stick it to the man.”

Several University of Puget Sound students were also amongst the counter-protesters, including UPS College Republican President, Whitney Ogle. “This is really an eye-opener. The media is reporting that this is an all student protest, but when you look [points across the street] you see a fair share of washed up hippies too,” Ogle said.

When Ogle and another UPS student questioned one high school boy about the sign he was holding: “He was like: I don’t know what it means, they just told me to hold it and chant,” remarked Ogle.

I’m sure many of the kids felt like they’re doing something positive.

And they were. They were doing something positive for Al Qaeda.

Staging these violent protests just helps feed the anti-American press, giving encouragement to the enemies of our country. Al Jazeera was all over this…

The Bush administration is depending largely on propaganda to face the eroding support of the American public, repeating claims that the U.S. armed forces are achieving great success in Iraq. Same policy was pursued by President Johnson during Vietnam War.

But no matter how hard Mr. Bush tries, it’s too late and almost impossible to win the hearts and minds of people who have become disenchanted and those who initially believed that the war wasn’t “worth it”.

The price for his lost war has been paid already.

But using 9/11 attacks has actually resulted in nothing but fueling the strong disapproval of Bush’s policy. No link between the attacks and Saddam’s regime was ever proven which made the public lose confidence in their President, who tried to use a national catastrophe to invade a sovereign nation, steal its wealth, and kill thousands of its civilians.

If you believe Al Jazeera, our entire country is against this war, rather than a small percentage who decide to go make a spectacle of themselves.

What other good did yesterday’s protesters do? What will be the result of their actions, other than the immediate gratification of “feeling good.” I know everyone wants to belong, to feel a sense of community. And I bet it’s easy to get swept up in the emotion of the moment.

But they’re missing the bigger picture here.

We went into Iraq for good reason. And we’re making good progress as well. I have issues with the way we’re handling certain things, but overall I’m proud of what we’ve achieved: the positive developments toward democracy for the Iraqi people. We definitely need an exit strategy. And I assume we have one (since I’m not a high-ranking military official, they don’t loop me in on all their meetings and plans). But putting our plans & timetables out there for public approval is not the way we conduct military operations.

And encouraging our enemies is no way to support our troops.

If our kids become unwitting dupes, helping to back the organizations bent on toppling our government, these selfsame kids may wake up one day to find themselves in a “socialist utopia” like Cuba, China, or the former Soviet Union.
