Roll over and play liberal
President George W. Bush currently bears one of our country’s most important responsibilities: Nominating a justice to sit on the bench of the Supreme Court.
And who does he pick to replace outgoing liberal/swing vote Sandra Day O’Connor?
Someone with NO experience as a judge: Harriet Miers.
Let me repeat that.
SHE HAS NO EXPERIENCE AS A JUDGE.
One would think that the first requirement for being a justice in the highest court in the nation would be prior experience!! She’s been a lawyer, sure. Even with some impressive credentials. But not as a judge! Paul Deignan summed it up quite nicely:
Harriet Miers is many things, but she is not a Constitutional scholar, well-seasoned in elective office, or someone who has made many public speeches or presentations on the workings of government. She is an unknown and unproven functionary whose chief virtue is the one virtue that we must reject–a strong tie to a particular chief executive.
Is he just opening up his address book, closing his eyes, and picking his buddies for political offices? It sure looks that way.
He could have nominated any one of many well-suited candidates:
Janice Rogers Brown
Edith Jones
Michael J. Luttig
Emilio Garza
Edith Brown Clement
Samuel Alito
But no. We’re treated to another round of cronyism. After his home run with “Brownie,” I thought he’d do better this time.
WHY, Mr. President? Why not pick someone with the chops needed for this job? Why not nominate someone who will decidedly tip the court away from its recent judicial activism? Why inject this already-contentious process with more controversy?
And why give the Democrats more rope to hang you with?
What’s his rationale for her nomination (other than the fact that they’re old friends)?
“She has devoted her life to the rule of law and the cause of justice”
And she worked for Meals On Wheels.
Ooh. Color me impressed.
But hey, I’m not the President. Bush knows her, I don’t. She may be a wonderful person. She may turn out to be another justice in the mold of Scalia.
And monkeys might fly out of my butt.
I think I’m pretty safe here. But I’ll keep the Preparation H handy during the confirmation hearings, just in case.

Captain Ed gives good reason to be disappointed.
The Anchoress thinks Bush is working his rope-a-dope.
And Hugh Hewitt seem to be more upbeat about Bush’s choice, too.

Confirm Them offers some reasons to be patient.
Time Magazine Online even says Miers is a “safe pick”.
But Confederate Yankee is on top of the Left’s first salvo of attacks on Miers’ sexuality. Can ya believe that?
UPDATE: Moveon.org is blatantly digging for dirt on Miers. Now I may be skeptical of her, but that’s just plain nasty.
