I believe…
(I’ve been meaning to post this one for a while, and have added to it a bit at a time for a couple months now. I thought I’d stir things up a bit since it’s been so quiet around here. If you agree or disagree with what I’m about to throw down, post it in the comments section. I’m curious to see the beliefs of those who read here.)
I believe prostitution should be legal. Guys pay women for sex all the time without being arrested. It’s called “dating.” The only difference is in the timing of when the money changes hands.
I believe pot should be legal (I don’t smoke it, by the way, but I have no issue with it). It’s no worse than alcohol, in fact it could be argued that it’s not as harmful. There are far more dangerous drugs out there that literally destroy people’s lives and bodies. Like cigarettes (tobacco). Since we’ll never outlaw that deadly drug, we should at least make medical marijuana legal and available.
I believe porn should be legal (or at least less stigmatized) and the government needs to get its fingers out of the porn websites. If you think it’s degrading to women, don’t buy it. If you think it’s wrong morally because it shows sex, don’t buy it. If you don’t want your kids to see it, then stay involved in their lives, teach them what you think is right and wrong, and monitor what your children do. But porn doesn’t affect you if you’re not viewing it. Don’t tell other adults that they can’t view human sexuality for their own enjoyment. If we allowed only the most uptight among us to determine right and wrong, there’d be only church hymns on the radio and prayer services on TV.
Conversely, I believe you CAN legislate morality. We do it all the time. No stealing. No hitting. No killing. Stuff like that is morality, and we have laws about it. It’s weak-minded to fall back on an argument saying “you can’t legislate morality”. If we didn’t, there would be anarchy. We should, however, come to a consensus as a people about what that morality is. Allow more public votes on hotbutton issues rather than allowing legislators and justices to create their own version of how the common person should live.
I believe gay civil unions should be legal, and churches wishing to marry gays should be allowed to. But churches who believe homosexuality is wrong should not be forced to perform weddings.
I believe gay couples should be allowed to adopt. I’m not crazy about it, but I think there are far too many children living in foster homes where they are viewed as a source of income rather than being loved and celebrated for who they are as people. Why not allow a child to be raised in a loving home, regardless of whether it’s homo or hetero? Heterosexuality is no indication of valid parenting ability. Anybody ever watch Nanny 911?
I believe private organizations should be able to include or exclude whomever they wish. The Boy Scouts should not be forced to admit homosexuals as leaders if they’re morally opposed to them. All-male or all-female schools should be allowed to exist without being forced to admit the opposite sex. And if there are all-black colleges, then all-white colleges should be permitted as well. If one is wrong/illegal/unethical, then the other is wrong/illegal/unethical too. You can’t have it both ways.
Similarly, I believe it’s wrong to admit women into combat positions but not make women eligible for the draft. And I think that unless a vast majority of woman can pass the physical requirements for combat training (without lowering the standards), they should not be allowed in combat positions at all. When bullets start to fly, war won’t become easier for those unable to pack the gear. Either women are up for combat, with all the risks (and career opportunities) as men, or they’re not. If so, make them the same as men in the service. If not, then keep their assignments to either combat service or combat service support roles, not combat roles. On a related note, men and women in the military should all go through boot camp the same. Same exercises, same haircuts, same uniforms. It’s ridiculous to go easy on one gender but still say that things are “equal.”
I believe affirmative action is racism, plain and simple. I find it insulting to say that someone of a certain ethnicity should receive special treatment, whether good or bad. Whether it’s a job or promotion or whatever, it should be on the basis of accomplishment.
I believe that many leaders in the black community are responsible for the current hateful atmosphere between blacks and whites. There are many other ethnic groups (Chinese, American Indians, Japanese, Irish, etc) who were enslaved or put upon in our country’s past. But I don’t hear any other group crying for reparations and continuing to exacerbate racial tensions. We need calls for unity, not for keeping our cultures separate.
I believe multiculturism is a poison which unravels the fabric of America. Maintaining one’s native language, culture, and traditions is a good thing. But when someone lives in this country for 10 years or more and still can’t read or write English, we have problems. Those who choose to live here and be citizens should be encouraged to join this society, not remain separate from it.
I believe illegal immigrants should be deported immediately whenever they are found. They should not receive free healthcare or housing assistance or other public help programs. We’ve already got plenty of impoverished Americans as it is. Let immigrants either come here legally or get the hell back to where they came from.
I believe abortion is murder, but I also think abortion legality should be decided on a state-by-state basis without Roe v Wade declaring it for everyone. I think we’ve let the proverbial cat out of the bag by making this form of infanticide legal, and outlawing it now will be as fruitless as prohibition was. But if we allow the people of the United States to vote on this issue, we’ll see where people really stand on it, and states will declare it for themselves without our cultural and political elite deciding for them.
I believe cable television should be able to broadcast R-rated content after 9-o’clock, just like pay movie channels (e.g. HBO, Cinemax, etc) as long as they run the appropriate content warnings. Stop treating the American public like children.
I believe strippers should not be forced to wear g-strings or pasties. It’s ridiculous to say that it’s ok to drink alcohol and watch a near-nude woman bump and grind, but if you manage to see a nipple or her labia, then all hell’s gonna break loose.
I believe healthcare is not something that should be given out by the government. We already have programs to help the poor receive healthcare. We shouldn’t expand that as another entitlement program for everyone.
I believe that if you like socialism, you should move to a socialist country. Stop trying to make America into a communist/Marxist/socialist state.
I believe big business is not always bad and big government is not always good.
I believe that among liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, there are good and bad people in both parties. There are well-intentioned folks as well as ill-informed folks on both sides. Neither side has the moral high ground. Both sides have many participants who are morally corrupt. And far too many politicians of both stripes are adept at pointing the finger at the other guy while hiding their own weaknesses.
I believe that conservatism generally encourages people to do things for themselves while liberalism generally teaches a victim mentality and dependence on someone else (especially the Democrat party). History proves that out.
I believe the Democrats are better at public relations. They are better at saying “see how bad our opponents are and how good we are.” For example, the public perception that Republicans are in the pocket of big business, while the truth is that BOTH parties are beholden to huge corporations. Just different ones.
I believe there IS a liberal bias in the mainstream media. Not only do the vast majority of journalists admit that their personal beliefs are liberal, but headlines are frequently worded to tilt that way. Counterpoints are frequently either abbreviated or left out altogether in many, many stories. Also, the choice in what leads the news is liberal or anti-conservative a vast majority of the time.
I believe the majority of gun control is wrong as well as worthless. 50 years ago, guns were even easier to buy and the murder & crime rates were a mere fraction of what they are today, even allowing for population changes. It’s not guns which are the problem, it’s the prevailing attitude among many that human life is worthless. There’s also no fear of punishment among the criminally-minded.
Laws don’t stop crime. Let me repeat that in case it didn’t sink in. LAWS DON’T STOP CRIME. Laws can only punish. They can punish the law-abiding before any crime is committed, or they can be used to punish the lawbreakers after the fact. Thieves, child molesters, murderers, rapists, etc will do whatever they want to do regardless of what the law says. One can only hope that punishment is severe enough to deter a small percentage of potential criminals.
On a related note, I believe prison/incarceration is far too lenient. Both in time served as well as conditions served. All too often, inmates live better in prison than they did at home. Life in a maximum security prison should be extremely harsh. Not torturous, mind you, but certainly not the air conditioned, cable TV-equipped, weight room facilities they frequently are.
I believe a life sentence should mean exactly that. No parole. It shouldn’t take 3 or 4 life sentences to keep a convict behind bars for the rest of his life. Similarly, a 20 year sentence should take 20 years to serve, etc.
I believe smoking among the underage isn’t caused by advertisements. It’s caused by Hollywood stars who smoke on TV and in the movies. As a young person, did you emulate your heroes of the big screen, or did you pattern your behavior after the commercials you saw?
I believe George Bush has been mostly a good leader. I believe he’s done a good job of handling the country. And the economy. I believe Al Gore and John Kerry would have been all about appeasement, and I think America is better off for Bush’s leadership. But it still pisses me off that the leader of the free world can’t pronounce “nuclear”. [UPDATE for 2008: President George W. Bush has demonstrated a terrible grasp of economics, allowing rampant and unsustainable Democrat-style spending. He helped keep our economy going after 9/11, but in later years things have really run off the rails.]
I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to find Saddam’s WMDs, but I believe we were right to take him out. It was long overdue.
I believe the WMDs in question are hidden in Syria. What I wanna know is why we gave warning for so long that we were gonna come back in there, giving Saddam ample time to smuggle things across the border.
I believe we need to get our collective asses out of Iraq. We got a good process started there, but we don’t need to stay. Nor should we. The Islamic countries need to step up and provide troops to help strengthen the burgeoning Iraqi police and military forces. As we are discovering, the Iraqi people (and Islamic societies in general) are not going to have a free democratic society the way we’d like them to. If they base their laws on the Q’uran, and it looks like they’re going to, then women will still be treated as second-class citizens and the heavy-handed torture will resume under new management. And that’s not worth one single American life. Get our men and women home now. We’ve done our part.
I believe the next time some Islamic fanatic beheads another American citizen, we should bring out the nukes and make an example of those responsible. Several years ago, we made it plain that if countries harbor terrorists, they would pay the price for complicity. So let’s reissue that warning, but this time make it perfectly clear what the consequences will be if it happens again. And then make good on it. It seems that the Islamofascist mindset only respects strength. So let’s show them our strength. In this war of attrition, let’s raise the stakes to the point of making further conflict impractical as well as undesirable. Those of you opposed to nuclear weapons, please refer to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and observe how the use of extreme force saved millions of American lives. Millions. Of American lives. Now go back and look at how diplomacy and restrained military force is NOT working, nor has ever worked in the history of the Middle East. There’s a saying that’s particularly apropos; “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” I think it may be time to remind the world that we are not the impotent giant we have been for the past 50 years.
Chew on all that and tell me what sticks in your throat.
