Blood in the water
The Democrats are licking their chops. They finally see a chance for “gotcha” against their most hated target on the Right: the man who orchestrated their defeat in the past 2 Presidential elections.
It would appear that Karl Rove stepped on his dick when he revealed to a reporter the fact that Joe Wilson’s wife worked for the CIA. The spin machine on the Right is trying to parse the truth, saying that he didn’t reveal her name or position and didn’t know she was currently undercover. But damn, he sure did leak that she’s in the CIA. I don’t care if it was a casual conversation. I don’t even care if it was “off the record.” She was working undercover at the time. I’m no lawyer, and I admit I’ve got a shaky grasp of the facts on this (only having read about it in the past week or so) but it sounds to me like he committed a crime by referring to her at all in a conversation to the press. Even if it’s not officially a crime, it seems to me that what he did was wrong.
I know what’s been said in his defense. He was straightening out an error in a reporter’s story about who was sending Joe Wilson to Iraq to investigate the WMD situation. I still think the reporter, Matthew Cooper of Time, burned Rove out of spite. And I wanna know the sources of Robert Novak and Judith Miller, as they seem to be more likely as the one who actually named Valerie Plame as an undercover CIA operative specializing on weapons of mass destruction. Still, Rove is a big boy and is supposed to know better than to reveal something so sensitive as a potential undercover agent. He could have referred to Plame in more vague terms that would have protected her identity while still showing that Cooper needs to check his facts a bit more before running his story. At least Rove’s lawyer, Robert Luskin, is saying that he won’t be hiding behind the defense that he did not identify Wilson’s wife because he did not specifically use her name. Sounds good, but we’ll see.
With all the nasty back-and-forth between Left and Right on this issue, I think part of what we’re seeing now is the true legacy of 8 years under Bill Clinton. His entire time in office, not only did he besmirch the office of the President, but his moral relativism seeped into the moral fiber of America.
First we had Clinton saying “It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.”
Now we’ve got Republicans saying “it depends on what the meaning of the word ‘identity’ is.”
Democrats, you don’t like the defense of Karl Rove? Shut up and take it. Your boy made an 8-year career of obfuscation and stonewalling. He committed at least one felony (that we are sure of) while serving as President and refused to step down even when his perjury was displayed repeatedly on TV.
Republicans, you hated when Clinton did it, that doesn’t make it ok for you to do it now.
