Senator smokes crack on Senate floor

I’m outraged to find that our tax dollars are supporting the crack habits of a few certain Senators. Based on yesterday’s statements about Guantanamo from Illinois senator Dick Durbin, he’s clearly been smoking some kind of controlled substance.

“You would most certainly believe that this had happened by Nazis, Soviets in their Gulags or some mad regime, Pol Pot and others, that had no concern for human beings.”

There’s no other explanation for such an outrageous statement.

First off, Pol Pot was a Marxist genocidal maniac who murdered over 2 million of his own citizens, so that’s not even remotely similar to this. Let’s keep the ridiculous smears confined to prisons and then we can look at the facts and compare. Shall we?

Nazi concentration camps featured things like:

…a gas chamber, an incinerator room with equipment intended for the burning of human bodies, a cell room and an autopsy room. The correlation between the remains of the camp and millions dead could not be grasped even on personal inspection.

Little Camp was a nightmare with 1,000 to 1,200 prisoners in a space meant for 450. In Germany in Defeat, Percy Knauth described Little Camp’s prisoners as, “emaciated beyond all imagination or description. Their legs and arms were sticks with huge bulging joints, and their loins were fouled by their own excrement. Their eyes were sunk so deep that they looked blind. If they moved at all, it was with a crawling slowness that made them look like huge, lethargic spiders. Many just lay in their bunks as if dead.” The smell of Little Camp, the smell emanating from discarded, decaying flesh, burning bodies, and an open concrete ditch that serviced as the latrine, was indescribable. Even after liberation, twenty prisoners in each Little Camp block died a day. They were gnomes, sticklike figures with sunken eyes who would hobble forward to cry and yell at the sight of their liberators.

Soviet gulags were forced-labor camps, in case you forgot your history. Here’s a brief description:

Conditions in the camps were extremely harsh. Prisoners received inadequate food rations and insufficient clothing, which made it difficult to endure the severe weather and the long working hours; sometimes the inmates were physically abused by camp guards. As a result, the death rate from exhaustion and disease in the camps was high.

…prisoners, in practice, ceased to be regarded as human beings and were rather considered to be expendable labor, to be fed as little as possible and worked as hard as possible.

Does this sound like what we’ve heard about Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay? Or even come close to what we’ve seen in those so-called torture photos?

Not. Even. Fucking. Close.

Let’s look at how we’re “abusing” these Islamic militants. Air conditioning, clean clothing, an extraordinary demonstration of respect for their religion (free Q’urans, free prayer mats, directions painted in each cell showing which direction to pray towards Mecca), a world class gym, and food like “Orange Glazed Chicken, Fresh Fruit Roupee, Steamed Peas and Mushrooms, Rice Pilaf”. On the other hand, feeding the detainees MRE’s, the standard fare given to our troops on the front lines, is considered an “abuse” under restrictions imposed by Congress.

You gotta be kidding me.

Gitmo is more like Club Med than a concentration camp. Prisoners there are treated better than we treat our own soldiers on duty! To decry our treatment of these terrorist detainees and to compare our military to historical occurances of true torture and abuse is an INSULT to the suffering of Jews in Nazi camps and the Russians who died by the millions in Soviet gulags. As well as a slap in the face of all American soldiers. Donald Sensing did a brilliant pictorial comparison of prisoner treatment, you can see it here.

If you’re as outraged as I am by this disgusting spew of anti-American garbage from a supposedly American Senator, tell him what you think by calling his Senate office at (202) 224-2152.
