Linda Tripp is no Deep Throat

Apparently, it’s ok to topple the President of the United States as long as he’s a Republican.

At least that’s the gist of what’s being said in the press this week. Or maybe I should say it’s the gist of what’s not being said in the press this week.

I’m sure by now you’ve read and heard all about W. Mark Felt being the infamous “Deep Throat” informant of the 1970s who helped uncover corruption in the Nixon administration. The information he leaked to the Washington Post revealed the coverup of the Watergate break-ins, information which should have been brought to Congress. This guy was the #2 in the FBI. They’re supposed to report to Congress. And given the fact that the Congress was being run by the Democrats, you can bet your ass he would have found a receptive audience. But Mr. Felt decided it’d be better to dump the intel into the press.

Ok, but now we’ve got a similar situation in modern times. But it wasn’t handled with the same kind of adulation and glad-handing as Deep Throat has enjoyed. Just ask Linda Tripp. Apparently, it’s ok to leak info as long as you remain completely anonymous. And as long as you’re not an ugly woman. And especially, as long as it’s not about Democrats. Tripp revealed corruption and coverup in the Clinton administration, but she was made a laughingstock by the press and pop culture. Why isn’t she a hero to the press?

Oh wait. I forgot.

This is the same press that heaps their praise on Dan Rather for his forged documents. And now, John Kerry is trying the same thing with another shaky “memo”. Hey, it’s ok, it’s all in effort to remove the Nasty McEvil George W. Bush, another Republican great satan. That makes everything ok, right?

*sigh* I’m gonna ramble a bit. Bear with me.

Has anyone who reads this blog ever read Alan Moore’s The Watchmen? It’s a graphic novel whose storyline seems to have a bit of relevance to this situation. I was just thinking, “what can be done to stop all this political game-playing and ludicrous gridlock?” And I can’t think of anything. At. All. Seems there’s no end of people eager to hate their fellow countrymen as long as their political opinions are different. Anyway, what does The Watchmen have to do with this? In the story, someone is murdering old superheroes. During the course of the book, we discover a plot has been engineered by one of the most powerful old heroes. His plan involved creating a horrendous tragedy that would be so terrible as to bring all the world together. It struck me that we actually had that happen on 9/11/2001. And we came together as Americans. But damnit, we forget so soon, and we’re so quick to get back to our selfish, angry, pitiful lives. There seems no way for people to get along.

I’m just really hating politics today.
