Liberal means never having to say you’re sorry

Over the past week, I kept hearing the words like treason and traitor used to describe Illinois Senator Dick Durbin’s recent comments, so I thought I’d look up the definitions to see if they were accurate.

trea·son (tre’ zin) n.

Violation of allegiance toward one’s country or sovereign, especially the betrayal of one’s country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies.

trai·tor (tra-ter) n.

One who betrays one’s country, a cause, or a trust, especially one who commits treason.

Yep. They’re accurate. He fits the definition of traitor. Especially given the fact that his words have been a big boost to Al Quaeda, if what’s written in Aljazeera is any indication. Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt, and say that he didn’t intend to help our enemies, someone who makes it into elected office should know better.

So, after several days of the calls from outraged Americans, Dick Durbin finally offered a half-ass apology at the end of the day on Friday…

“I have learned from my statement that historical parallels can be misused and misunderstood. I sincerely regret if what I said caused anyone to misunderstand my true feelings…”

What a weasel. What a mealymouth, half-assed excuse for an apology.

Misused and misunderstood? No, Mr. Durbin, the problem isn’t that you were misunderstood. We understood you perfectly, which is why there is so much outrage that your switchboard can’t handle the volume of angry callers. There was no question how you used historical despots and mass murderers as analogies to how you view our military, for the purpose of politically weakening the Bush administration.

Durbin won’t simply come out and say that he was wrong. He won’t simply come out and say that he never should have compared our military to fascists and mass murderers. And he damn sure won’t simply say he’s sorry.

Nope. He’s got to try to twist his words, following on the shining example that was President Bill Clinton. To paraphrase, “it depends on what the meaning of the word ‘traitor’ is”.

I think there should, at VERY least, be a Congressional censure of Senator Durbin.

President Bush needs to publically call this turncoat on the carpet to account for his statements. He needs to be rebuked and called upon to retract his irresponsible words.

And where in all this liberal “hate the U.S. soldiers” rhetoric is Hillary Clinton, who is trying to portray herself as a “moderate” Democrat?

She’s not condemning Dubin’s hateful anti-American statements. She’s not calling for his apology or censure. Because, like many on the extreme left, she actually agrees with it. She’s probably glad he said what he said. And since most Americans’ attention span is about 15 minutes long, she knows if she can just keep quiet for a few days, it’ll all blow over and she won’t have to take a stand on this.

Why is there nobody from the leadership of the Democrat party who will step up and renounce Senator Durbin’s anti-American invective? Where’s Howard Dean on this? John Kerry? Joe Lieberman? Ted Kennedy?

Out to lunch, all of ‘em.

Democrats can’t claim to “support our troops” on one hand and then compare them to the Nazis, the Soviet KGB, and the Khmer Rouge on the other. Senator Durbin, by issuing a public statement, is speaking on behalf of the Democrat party.

So where is the party leadership to yank his chain and get him back in line (or boot him out)?

Perhaps they all truly believe our military is nothing more than a bunch of murderous Nazis. That sure fits with the Michael Moore school of philosophy. And Durbin is the Senate Democrats’ whip, so he truly does speak for their party.

Which would explain why they keep losing more and more elections. And getting further and further out of touch with the rest of mainstream America.

Come on, Democrats. Come on, liberals. Step up and prove Durbin wrong.

Someone? Anyone?
