OKC remembered
Let’s take a moment today to show respect for the 168 people (including 19 children and infants) murdered 10 years ago in the Oklahoma City bombing. Last night, I was watching a news story on the memorial as well pre-coverage of today’s event. Watching the file footage again, it seems hard to believe that someone could be so hate-filled as to assassinate so many of his fellow countrymen. Well, let me correct myself, fellow countrymen, women, and CHILDREN.
It’s important that we remember why it happened. I’m as outraged as anyone over the cause of the bombing: it was a direct response to then-Attorney General Janet Reno’s order to incinerate 80 Branch Davidian men, women, and children in Waco two years before. And I know that Timothy McVeigh, the crazy scumbag terrorist who carried out the OKC bombing, was outraged at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms for their actions in Waco. But that doesn’t justify targeting a building filled with innocent civilians! The Davidians probably weren’t quite as dangerous as Reno portrayed them to be, but they sure weren’t your average Americans, either. Cult leader David Koresh thought he was Jesus, he had multiple wives, including teenage girls, and was running quite the nutball cult. Even had quite the stockpile of arms, too. And when the ATF decided to corner them all instead of nabbing Koresh when he was outside the compound, they basically turned this den of crazies into a bunch of defensive crazies with guns. But last time I checked, there are LOTS of really weird and dangerous cults going on out there. And I haven’t seen George Bush burning ANY of them to death. We even accord more protection to the Muslim fanatics that have murdered Americans than we did to the Davidians.
Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked and am in full rant mode, my apologies. All that was backstory to the tragedy we’re commemorating today. Regardless of why it happened, there was a terrible crime that occurred at exactly 9:02am today, ten years ago. And those who needlessly lost their lives deserve a moment of remembrance.
