Hello, Pot? This is Kettle…
I was dumbfounded today to read former president Clinton’s assessment of the Pope’s life work. On the flight over to Rome, he was quoted as saying that the Pope “may have had a mixed legacy”.
You gotta be shittin’ me.
I don’t necessarily agree with all the Pope did or said. I’m not even a fan of the Catholic religion. But geez, when you’re going over to be part of the U.S. delegation for the Pope’s funeral, that wouldn’t be the time to badmouth the guy, even in such mealymouth language. I’m guessing Clinton never heard that saying about people who live in glass houses. Hey, we all have our frailties and shortcomings. But of all people, he’s not the one to make remarks about leaving a mixed legacy. Here’s just a small list of Clinton’s achievements in his self-described “most ethical administration in history”. The full list can be found here.
Clinton’s legacy:
- The only president ever impeached on grounds of personal malfeasance
- Most number of convictions and guilty pleas by friends and associates
- Most number of cabinet officials to come under criminal investigation
- Most number of witnesses to flee country or refuse to testify
- Most number of witnesses to die suddenly
- First president sued for sexual harassment.
- First president accused of rape.
- First first lady to come under criminal investigation
- Largest criminal plea agreement in an illegal campaign contribution case
- First president to establish a legal defense fund.
- First president to be held in contempt of court
- Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions
- Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions from abroad
With a record like his, including his incompetence in dealing with terrorism, to domestic fiascos like Elian Gonzales, Waco, and the murders at Ruby Ridge, to his endless series of sexual misconduct in and out of the Oval Office and his further crimes of obfuscation, it seems to me that Bill Clinton might do best to just keep his mouth shut and stay out of the limelight.
But that would take a little humility. My bad.
