What the heil?
Poor Democrats. Poor liberals. They really are self-destructing.
Earlier in the week, it was Ted Kennedy contradicting himself just to be able to oppose President Bush. Now it’s Janeane Garofalo falling off the deep end.
I’m late to the party on this one. Again. But apparently Janeane Garofalo was on MSNBC the other night, likening the Republicans to Nazis. That’s no big news in and of itself, because liberals frequently like to throw out terms like “neo-con”, or “neo-conservative” to evoke the idea “neo-nazi” and tie Republicans to it in order to discredit them. And some of the extreme left likes to use the term Nazi to marginalize political opponents whenever they find their liberal/socialist ideology is losing traction. Namecalling is their frequent tool.
But in this case, she’s gone too far.
Surprise.
Garofolo was disgusted with the Republicans during the State Of The Union address for their (inked fingers) show of solidarity with Iraqi voters who dipped a finger in ink when they voted. “The inked fingers and the position of them, which is gonna be a Daily Show photo already, of them signaling in this manner [Nazi salute], as if they have solidarity with the Iraqis who braved physical threats against their lives to vote as if somehow these inked-fingered Republicans have something to do with that.”
Wow. That’s an interesting run-on sentence that would make Dan Quayle proud.
But here’s a news flash. The Republicans, and President Bush especially, DO have something to do with that. Hello, McFly? The United States Of America deposed Saddam Hussein, freeing the Iraqi people to hold a historic vote and hopefully ushering in a new era of freedom in Iraq.
Hell, even some Democrats were in favor of going to war in Iraq. Before they voted against it.
To her, there can be no “show of solidarity” unless Republicans have actually gone to Iraq and braved the same dangers of the Iraqi people. Then I guess nobody should wear the pink ribbons unless they have breast cancer. Shouldn’t wear the red ribbon unless they have AIDS. Shouldn’t wear the yellow wristbands unless they have testicular cancer and have ridden in the Tour de France.
But her use of the “seig heil” to demagogue Republicans is typical and pathetic. Not to mention, it’s a complete show of disrespect to all the Iraqis who DID brandish their stained fingers in enthusiastic displays of their newfound freedom.
It’s oddly telling to see her use of that particular salute, the Palestinians (a regular cause of liberals) use of the same salute and, of course, the historical salute used by Hitler & Mussolini.
Coincidence? Maybe.
But the fascist ideology behind it certainly seems to match up.
