The Bush 2005 European Tour
President Bush has been in Europe this week, meeting leaders and diplomats, trying to shore up support for America. For the most part, I think he did a pretty good job (time will tell). His relationship with world leaders has been pretty tenuous thus far. But his sense of humor and easygoing nature seems to have helped a great deal in terms of improving things with France’s Jacques Chirac and Germany’s Gerhard Schroeder and Russia’s Vladamir Putin. It seems like Putin may have been miffed by Bush’s comments about Russian needing to uphold basic freedoms like the right to dissent. But overall, it seems to have gone well.
Personally, I’m aggravated that Bush saw fit to “mend fences” with them. Yes, I know, as President, it’s Bush’s duty to try to make and keep the peace. But France has repeatedly demonstrated itself to be anti-American, if not our outright enemies. They’ve had dirty dealings with Saddam and opposed us in order to protect that stream of blood money. And now they’re vying for lucrative Pentagon contracts in Iraq. No way should they be allowed to profit from reconstruction when they were against the whole thing in the first place. Didn’t they ever read The Little Red Hen?
Sure, meet with Putin. Maybe even with Schroeder. But I think he should have dissed France. At least until they change their position on Iraq. Or on bathing.
