No WMDs? WTF?!!

Well, yesterday the Iraq Survey Group concluded their search and announced that there were no “Weapons of Mass Destruction” in Iraq. This has led to a chorus of “I Told You So” from the left big enough to make the Mormon Tabernacle Choir feel small in comparison. While I have not read the official report, I’ve heard the gist of things enough to draw two possible conclusions.

One, that there were truly no WMDs in Iraq, and Saddam really did destroy all his naughty playthings 10 years ago. This would assume that he followed the rules in this regard, despite all the other things he was doing, like that nice Oil-For-Food program he had going with Khofi Anan.

Two, that there really were WMDs as US Intelligence had indicated, and that they were successfully hidden outside of Iraq in the months and months leading up to the US invasion. There was a lot of information indicating this was happening (why we didn’t confront Syria, I’ll never know).

Which of these two conclusions seems more probable, given Saddam Hussein’s history of obstruction and defiance? Hmm?

Even so, for us to base the decision for the invasion of Iraq so strongly on the presumed possession of said WMDs puts President Bush (and all of America, by default) in a pretty precarious position. Yeah, Saddam was a heinous ass and a major league sociopathic dictator, tyrant, and all-around monster. Yeah, the world is better off with him out of power (the 1,000,000+ dead Iraqis who died in his prisons, torture chambers, mass graves and genocidal attacks would definitely agree).

But I’ll stand here and totally admit, we do look like our pants are around our collective ankles over this WMD thing.
