MLK Day
Today makes me sad.
Sad for how the civil rights movement changed from being one based on the content of one’s character, to a huge entitlement program and one of discrimination against whites.
Judging from how some folks in the black community talk today, they never really heard what Dr. King Jr. had to say. Or at least have revised it in their minds. The way things were back then, black people weren’t able to even have the same basic treatment as white people in society. Those days are through. Whenever you hear of something like an idiot at a restaurant like Denny’s hassling black people, it becomes news and the people involved get in trouble. That’s the way it should be if ANYBODY is treated unfairly. Asian, Indian, black, white, etc. The world isn’t perfect, but discrimination against black Americans is no longer tolerated.
If you want entitlements and reparations and such, fine. But don’t take the views of a fine man like Dr. King and twist them to fit such a myopic agenda. It helps nobody to keep “the black community” separate from the rest of the country. So many of our socio-economic problems today are based in our fragmentation of society. Of keeping ourselves in little pockets of ethnicity and wealth, rather than everyone considering ourselves as simply Americans.
There are still racists in America. There probably always will be. On BOTH sides of the black/white fence.
There is still a divide between the haves and the have-nots. There always will be. Again, on BOTH sides of the black/white fence.
And the longer certain political parties use race as a divisive instrument rather than encourage people of all races to succeed, the deeper that divide will be.
Great men like Martin Luther King Jr. weren’t great just because they pointed out injustice. They are great because they also proposed positive changes. They lead by example and encouraged the best in people.
When you look at America and see what’s wrong, don’t fall into the temptation to just bitch. Try to see what’s right. And look for ways to improve what’s not right.
MLK’s dream has already come true. Now it’s time for new dreamers to take us further.
