Mandate this

Posted 10 Jan 2005 in Democrats, liberals

No wonder the Democrats keep losing more seats in the House & Senate. And on the local and national level. Not only do they not realize how out-of-touch they are, but they refuse to work with the side that has been elected by the majority of We The People.

An article in today’s Washington Post details how the Democrat party is planning an obstructionistic course for the next 4 years. Not that that’s any news. They’ve always been that way. It’s just that they’re being more open about it now. It’s frustrating that they can’t even TRY to do the job they were elected to do. They’re already assuming that the President won’t work with them (translation: give them everything they want without any input from Republicans).

The article mentions the word “mandate” twice. It seems to be a thorn in the Democrats’ side. Perhaps it would be worth reviewing the definition of the words mandate and majority, since the Dems obviously STILL don’t get it why they lost:

ma·jor·i·ty     (mé-jôr-i-te) n.
1. The greater number or part; a number more than half of the total.
2. The amount by which the greater number of votes cast, as in an election, exceeds the total number of remaining votes.
3. The political party, group, or faction having the most power by virtue of its larger representation or electoral strength.

man·date   (man’dat) n.
1. An authoritative command or instruction.
2. A command or an authorization given by a political electorate to its representative.

Note that a mandate doesn’t mean that everyone in the country agrees on one course of action. Nobody is saying that everyone in America likes George Bush or agrees with all of his policies. But there are more than half of the citizens of this nation who feel a certain way about what should be done, and they voted in one accord for that.

When over 50% of the country votes for one candidate, that’s a majority. When the majority of the country picks a man, despite all the vitriol summoned against him by the media and most in Hollywood and pop culture, that’s a mandate. When the majority of the country picks a man, despite 4 years of baseless attacks meant to demean and insult his ability and his character, that’s a mandate.

But listen closely. Because this is what hasn’t been said.

The mandate isn’t just to President Bush. It’s also to the people who voted for John Kerry.

This should be your wake-up call. You who voted for Kerry are not the majority in America. And you haven’t been the majority. You’ve just been more vocal. More high-profile. Often times, you’ve just been more fun to look at, listen to, and follow. It’s easier to feel good about what you say and what you profess to feel. But your words and your positions are like plastic fruit in a nice wooden bowl: beautiful to look at, but completely devoid of any real value.

The majority of Americans can’t stomach your views anymore. Your liberal mandates lack the teeth of having a majority behind it. As minority party, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a say. It just means your positions aren’t the majority view (duh). As such, perhaps there should be less obstructionism and more cooperation.
