Cautiously optimistic today

Posted 20 Jan 2005 in George W. Bush

Today is Bush’s inauguration for his second term of office. I know there are lots of folks who are very unhappy with that (for various reasons) but I’m not one of ‘em. I certainly don’t agree with the President on everything. But I think he’s done a pretty good job with the country for the past four years. Especially if you consider the economy in recession that was handed to him by Clinton, then the 9/11 attacks, he’s done a damn fine job so far. I do take issue with him on a few things, most notably the heavy-handed thugs in the FCC. But that’s something to be handled over the next few years (and in another post). We can respectfully disagree on issues and still support our elected leader.

Are you listening, Democrats?

To those who question the cost of the inauguration, I would ask them if they questioned President Clinton on either of his inaugurations. I’d wager not. There were plenty of military actions going on during his 8 years in the White House.

There will always be important things happening around the globe. There will always be events that could be used as reasons not to have fun:

Did you go to a movie in the past year? How could you, you heartless ass! There is so much suffering around the globe! Our men & women are dying in Iraq! Why didn’t you send the money to them and just stay home?

Did you eat this week? How could you, you mean-spirited glutton! There are so many going hungry around the globe. Why didn’t you donate MORE of your income to the hungry? (because folks who wag their fingers at those enjoying life are seldom satisfied with any amount)

See? That’s just too easy.

No reason not to have a celebration.

I do hope that President Bush will take a moment during the festivities to honor all our men & women who are currently in harm’s way.

The ceremony is less than an hour away. We’ll see.
